"Black Magic" is a song recorded by British girl group Little Mix, released in May 2015 through Syco Music and Columbia Records as the lead single from their third studio album, Get Weird (2015). It is a teen pop and dance pop song with influences of '80s pop music. The single received acclaim from music critics upon release, who praised it for its catchy sound and upbeat tempo, and comparisons were made with the songs from the group's debut album, DNA (2012). "Black Magic" topped the UK Singles Chart, the first Little Mix single to do so since "Wings" in 2012 and the first song by an all-female group to reach number one since 2013. It remained at number one for three consecutive weeks, becoming the first song by a girl group to spend more than a single week at number one since "About You Now" by Sugababes in 2007. It was the fifth-biggest selling girl group single in the UK between 1994 and 2019. Outside of the United Kingdom, it peaked within the top ten in Australia, Ireland and Israel, and charted in 16 other territories. On the Billboard Hot 100, the single peaked at number 67, becoming the group's highest-charting single in the US. As of 2021, the song has been certified triple platinum in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and gold or higher in ten other countries, including diamond in Brazil. The song was nominated for Choice Love Song at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards, and for British Single of the Year and British Video of the Year at the 2016 Brit Awards. "Celebration" is a 1980 song by American band Kool & the Gang. Released as the first single from their twelfth album, Celebrate! (1980), it was the band's first and only single to reach No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 2016, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[3] In 2021, the Library of Congress selected "Celebration" for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". Co-founder Ronald Bell, the group's saxophonist and musical arranger, explained the origins of the song; The initial idea came from the Quran. I was reading the passage, where God was creating Adam, and the angels were celebrating and singing praises. Kool and the Gang / Celebration
Level 42 are an English jazz-funk band formed on the Isle of Wight in 1979. They had a number of UK and worldwide hits during the 1980s and 1990s. Their highest-charting single in the UK was "Lessons in Love", which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart, and number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, upon its release in 1986. An earlier single, "Something About You", was their most successful chart-wise in the United States, reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After much success as a live and studio band in the 1980s, Level 42's commercial profile diminished during the early 1990s following a series of personnel changes and musical shifts. It was written by the band's lead guitarist and principal songwriter Gary Kemp to express his feelings for Altered Images lead singer Clare Grogan. Kemp was influenced musically by songs of Marvin Gaye and Al Green he was listening to at the time, and lyrically by Green and the Beatles. "True" reached number one on the UK singles chart in April 1983 and made the top 10 in several other countries, including the US, where it became their first song to reach the Billboard Hot 100. Kemp wanted to shift the sound of Spandau Ballet into soul and incorporated band member Steve Norman's newfound interest in the saxophone into his writing; the band also updated its look to suits for the song's music video and tour. "True" was recorded with most of the other tracks from the album at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. The True album was released as its second single, "Communication", was climbing the UK Singles Chart. DJs were so enthusiastic about playing the title song that the band knew it would be their next single. The song has since become the band's signature hit. It has been covered by Paul Anka in a swing style, and used in films such as Sixteen Candles and 50 First Dates, as well as TV series such as Modern Family. Other artists have sampled it in their own hits, including P.M. Dawn, who went to number one in the US with "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" in 1991. In 1981, Spandau Ballet guitarist/songwriter Gary Kemp met Altered Images lead singer Clare Grogan and felt an "instant connection" in part due to their conversations about writers. Forever Now is the 10th studio album released by British pop musical group Level 42, released in March 1994. There were two releases of the album with different track-listings and cover art. The first release in 1994 on RCA Records has 11 tracks. In 1996, the album was re-issued by the label Resurgence, with 15 tracks including six additional tracks, but without the songs "Tired Of Waiting" and "All Over You". Also, some of the songs on this version varied in length from those on the RCA release, and the track "Billy's Gone" was completely remixed. The Resurgence album was re-released in 2009 by the label Edsel, as a double CD, bringing "Tired Of Waiting" and "All Over You" back to the track-listing again, and also adding extended remixes of "All Over You", "Forever Now", "Learn To Say No" and "Love In A Peaceful World". The sleeve notes for the reissue state that the Resurgence version of the album contained the original intended track- listing.[6] It was the final album release for Level 42 before their original break-up, and was their only album of the 90s to feature the participation of three original members: Mark King, Mike Lindup and Phil Gould. Level 42 released a new album in 2006, named Retroglide, with King, Lindup and Gary Husband and a small participation by Boon Gould. Phil Gould, dismayed at what he felt was the record company's ineptitude, did not go on the road with the band on their Forever Now tour. He was replaced for the tour with live session drummer Gavin Harrison, and Jakko Jakszyk rejoined on guitar. Forever Now is Level 42's best album since the mid-80s heyday of World Machine and Running in the Family. After a two-album hiatus, drummer Phil Gould returned to the band on what would become its final studio release. "Lifeline" is a song by English pop band Spandau Ballet, released on 24 September 1982 as the first single from what would be their third album, True (1983). The song confirmed the band's intent to transition from dance music to pop that was hinted at with their previous single, "Instinction". Some band members found an enjoyable chemistry with "Lifeline" producers Tony Swain and Steve Jolley that was lacking in recording sessions with previous producers. The new song received mixed reviews but reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also their first single to chart in the United States, missing the Billboard Hot 100 but charting on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 at number 8. The music video for the song received airplay on the U.S. cable channel MTV. "She Loved Like Diamond" was the third single from Spandau Ballet's second album, Diamond, but after its number 49 showing on the UK Singles Chart in early 1982,[2] the band feared that their future was in jeopardy.[3] They hired Buggles founder Trevor Horn to remix the Diamond track "Instinction" in order to have another single to promote the release of the LP, but Spandau songwriter Gary Kemp was concerned about putting the most pop-sounding song on the record in the hands of a pop producer.[4] Spandau Ballet made a point of representing their peers in the London club scene that began with their first album, Journeys to Glory,[5] but after the "Instinction" remix went to number 10,[2] Kemp found that the nightclub crowd was no longer interested in their music,[6] which meant he no longer had to focus solely on what they wanted to hear.[7] In his autobiography I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau, he wrote, "The freedom of not having to write just for Soho meant I could dive into that great big reservoir of pop, deep with melody and soul, and hopefully surface with the pearls I wanted. Where previously it had been about riffs and grooves, this time it would be about melody and chords."[8] He also averred that Spandau Ballet "felt no shame in embracing" a pop audience.[9] The band attempted to continue their work with Horn, who was especially interested in a new song Kemp had written called "Pleasure", but after a day of rehearsals in which drummer John Keeble was unable to satisfy Horn's demands, the new producer was ready to replace him.[10] Kemp rejected the idea, and Horn decided to end his work with the band.[11] Kemp told Smash Hits magazine in 1982, "We couldn't have worked with Trevor because he was too overpowering, too dogmatic."[12] The band's manager, Steve Dagger, suggested producers Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, who had recently worked with Bananarama, so the band presented the duo with several songs Kemp had finished writing.[13] The plan was to have them produce just one single to get a sense if they were right for the group before committing to anything more, and although "Communication" was considered, the song Jolley chose for their assignment was the "up-tempo, more obvious pop sing-along" "Lifeline".[14] Spandau Ballet was credited alongside Jolley and Swain as producers of "Lifeline"[15] as well as their next album, True. ---------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and HIT THAT BELL! "Smooth Operator" is a song by English band Sade from their debut studio album, Diamond Life (1984), and was co-written by Sade and Ray St. John. It was released as the album's third single in the United Kingdom as a 7-inch single with "Spirit" as its B-side, and as a 12-inch maxi single with "Smooth Operator" and "Red Eye" on side A and "Spirit" on side B. Released on 28 August 1984, it reached number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, "Smooth Operator" was released in February 1985, serving as the album's second US single. The song became Sade's first top-10 entry in the US, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in May 1985. It spent 13 weeks in the top 40, and also topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks. Although "Your Love Is King" remains Sade's highest-peaking single in the UK to date, "Smooth Operator" is the band's breakthrough single on the US charts, and their most successful single internationally. "Smooth Operator" is about a fashionable con-man who moves within high social circles. He is popular with women and breaks many hearts. The lyrics "Coast to coast, LA to Chicago, western male / Across the north and south, to Key Largo, love for sale"[6] imply that he also uses women to obtain his income. It is also clear that he does not hold sincere affection for these women, as Adu sings near the end, "his heart is cold". The video to this song reinforces the message and the operator, played by actor Michael Feast, appears to be a professional criminal. In one scene, he displays a gun to an interested customer, and in others, he appears to be a pimp. Apparently, he succeeds in evading law enforcement, who have him under surveillance. In the video, the operator cheats on Sade with a waitress of the nightclub (played by actress Amanda Pays). However, as revealed in the extended version of the video which contains the composition "Red Eye" (the next song on 12-inch single), Sade, cooperating with the police, hides behind the nightclub equipment and sees the criminal return to the club. Then she bumps into a box, causing a noise, and the criminal chases after her. When the police arrive outside, he tries to escape from them from rooftop to rooftop until he is shot and then falls from a rooftop to his death. The video was directed by Julien Temple, who would later cast Sade in his 1986 film musical Absolute Beginners. This song is noted for Adu's spoken recitation in the song's introduction. Some radio edits have omitted the spoken introduction and proceeded with the opening sung line of the title of the album, "Diamond Life". Some radio edits have shortened the instrumental saxophone solo, as well as the first repeat of the lines that come after the chorus portions.
