"Rock the Casbah" is a song by the English punk rock band The Clash, released in 1982 as the second single from their fifth album, Combat Rock. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US (their only top 10 single in that country) and, along with the track "Mustapha Dance", it also reached number eight on the dance chart.[4] The music for "Rock the Casbah" was composed by the band's drummer Topper Headon, based on a piano part that he had been toying with.[5][6] Finding himself in the studio without his three bandmates, Headon progressively taped the drum, piano and bass parts, recording the bulk of the song's musical instrumentation himself.[5][7] This origin makes "Rock the Casbah" different from the majority of Clash songs, which tended to originate with music written by the Joe Strummer–Mick Jones songwriting partnership.[7] Upon entering the studio to hear Headon's recording, the other Clash members were impressed with his creation, stating that they felt the instrumental track was essentially complete.[7] From this point, relatively minor overdubs were added, such as guitars and percussion. However, Strummer was not impressed by the page of suggested lyrics that Headon gave him.[5] According to Clash guitar technician Digby Cleaver, they were "a soppy set of lyrics about how much he missed his girlfriend".[5] "Strummer just took one look at these words and said, 'How incredibly interesting!', screwed the piece of paper into a ball and chucked it backwards over his head."[5] Strummer had been developing a set of lyrical ideas that he was looking to match with an appropriate tune. Before hearing Headon's music, Strummer had already come up with the phrases "rock the casbah" and "you'll have to let that raga drop", as lyrical ideas that he was considering for future songs.[8][9] After hearing Headon's music, Strummer went into the studio's bathroom and wrote lyrics to match the song's melody.[6][7] The version of the song on Combat Rock, as well as many other Clash compilations, features an electronic sound effect beginning at the 1:52-minute point of the song. This noise is a monophonic version of the song "Dixie". The sound effect source was generated by the alarm from a digital wristwatch that Mick Jones owned, and was intentionally added to the recording by Jones.[7] Algerian rock singer Rachid Taha believes that an early demo tape of his, which he gave to The Clash in 1981, helped inspire the original song. ---------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and HIT THAT BELL! The Clash / Rock The Casbah SLAP BASS!!!
T-Square (formerly known as The Square), stylized in all-uppercase T-SQUARE, is a Japanese jazz fusion band formed in 1976.[1] They became famous in the late 1970s and early 1980s along with other Japanese jazz bands.[2] They are known for songs such as "Truth",[3] "Japanese Soul Brothers",[4] "Takarajima",[5] and "Omens of Love",[6] among others. During the first years simply The SQUARE was printed on the frontsides of their albums.[7] After the renaming of the band to T-Square the imprint changed to T-SQUARE (all in Capital letters) and their typical logo became a capital letter T printed over a red square.[8] The logo has got modified several times, reflecting the changing band names such as T-Square alpha (where an α sign got added to the logo[9]), T-Square plus (where the text "plus" was added centered next to the T in smaller letters[10]).[11] "Truth" was used as the theme for Fuji Television's Formula One coverage from 1987 to 1998 and starting in 2012.[12][13] Special arrangements of this song were used as the theme for Japan's F1 2001 to 2006.[note 1] The band has won, all told, 12 Japan Gold Disc Awards. In the 80s, "SPORTS",[17] "Truth",[18] "Yes, No",[19] and even their "F1 Grand Prix" compilation album won Gold Discs in the Jazz-Fusion category.[20] In the 90s, "Natural",[21] "Impressive",[22] "Human",[23] "Natsu no Wakusei",[24] "B.C. A.D."[25] and "Gravity" all won Gold Discs.[26] After more than two decades without Gold Discs, they've recently won back-to-back for 2021's "FLY! FLY! "Mamma Mia" is a song by the Swedish pop group ABBA, written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, with the lead vocals shared by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It is the opening track on the group's third album, the self-titled ABBA (1975). The song was released in September 1975 as its sixth single. It tells the story of the narrator's on-again, off-again relationship with a lover who is repeatedly unfaithful to her. The song's name is derived from Italian and literally translates as "my mother", but is used as an interjection in situations of surprise, anguish, or excitement. The song was ABBA's first number one in the UK since "Waterloo" in 1974. The distinctive sound at the start of the song is the marimba.[2] According to biographer Carl Magnus Palm, the instrument was incorporated at the last minute, added after Benny Andersson found it in the studio and decided its "tick tock" rhythm was perfect for the track.[3] "Mamma Mia" was written at the home of Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and was the last track recorded for the album ABBA. It was one of four songs from the album to have a music video made to promote the album. Initially, however, "Mamma Mia" was never intended for release as a single.[2] Around this time, many artists were recording ABBA songs (such as "Honey, Honey" and "Bang a Boomerang"). ABBA offered "Mamma Mia" to British pop group Brotherhood of Man, who turned it down.[4] "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the Australian charts for three weeks; however, the promo clip for "Mamma Mia" proved the more popular after repeat screenings on Australian television, notably on the show Countdown.[5] ABBA's Australian record company, RCA, asked that "Mamma Mia" be released as a single but Polar Music refused, preferring them to release "SOS" first. However, Stig Anderson agreed to this; "Mamma Mia" was released in Australia in August 1975, where it spent 10 weeks at number one.[2] Cash Box said the single was "an example of [ABBA's] excellent musical taste," stating that the "tune is upbeat, with characteristically varied textures."[6] After this success in Australia, Epic Records in the United Kingdom took notice of ABBA for the first time since their Eurovision Song Contest winner "Waterloo". From then on, Epic began to heavily promote ABBA's singles with the immediate result of "SOS" reaching the Top 10 in the British market, their first hit since "Waterloo". "Mamma Mia" soon followed, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart in January 1976, the second of ABBA's 18 consecutive Top 10 singles there.[2] Record World said that "the reason [the song is a worldwide smash] should be self-explanatory after just one listen."[7] The B-side for the Australian release of "Mamma Mia" was "Hey, Hey Helen". In most other countries the B-side was the instrumental "Intermezzo Number 1". Roberta Cleopatra Flack (born February 10, 1937)[2][3] is a retired American singer who topped the Billboard charts with the No. 1 singles "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Killing Me Softly with His Song", and "Feel Like Makin' Love". Tania Maria (born May 9, 1948)[2] is a Brazilian artist, singer, composer, bandleader and piano player, singing mostly in Portuguese or English. Her Brazilian-style music is mostly vocal, sometimes pop, often jazzy, and includes samba, bossa, Afro-Latin, pop and jazz fusion. Tania's 1983 album Come With Me started her international breakthrough with the title song becoming a 1980s dance-floor classic that has since been covered frequently. A year later, in 1984, her Love Explosion album contained the track Deep Cove View which was promoted by Robbie Vincent on his late Sunday night soul shows on Radio 1. The 1985 album Made in New York increased her popularity further worldwide.[2] Maria has played virtually every important jazz festival in the world and has appeared on countless television and radio programmes. She has recorded more than 25 albums[4] and in 1985 was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female".[5] She has performed at venues such as the Blue Note and festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1981, 1983 and 1989, Saratoga Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Fest 1991, Montreux Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Newport Jazz Festival in 1975,[2] Puerto Rico Heineken Jazzfest 2001, Malta Jazz Festival 2003 at Maltese Islands, Novosadski Jazz Festival 2004, Belgium's Jazz Middelheim 2007. Stuart Hamm (born February 8, 1960) is an American bass guitar player,[1][2] known for his session and live work with numerous artists as well as for his unconventional playing style and solo recordings. Kings of Sleep is the second solo album released by bassist Stuart Hamm.[2] It was released on June 19, 1989 on Relativity Records. Thomas Abraham Misch (born 25 June 1995) is an English musician and producer.
