Charlie Hunter (born May 23, 1967) is an American guitarist, composer, producer and bandleader. First coming to prominence in the early 1990s, Hunter plays custom-made seven- and eight-string guitars on which he simultaneously plays bass lines, chords, and melodies. Critic Sean Westergaard described Hunter's technique as "mind-boggling...he's an agile improviser with an ear for great tone, and always has excellent players alongside him in order to make great music, not to show off."[1] Hunter's technique is rooted in the styles of jazz guitarists Joe Pass and Tuck Andress, two of his biggest influences, who blended bass notes with melody in a way that created the illusion of two guitars. Bing, Bing, Bing! is a 1995 album by jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter. This was his first album for the Blue Note Records and features his eight-string guitar. The cover is an homage to Horace Parlan's 1960 album, Speakin' My Piece. Louis Maxwell Cole is an American musician, singer-songwriter, video producer, and music video director. He is best known as the co-founder of the independent electronic jazz-funk duo Knower, along with Genevieve Artadi. He is also speculated to be a member of the avant-garde musical duo Clown Core. As a solo artist, he has released five studio albums; his fourth album, Quality Over Opinion (2022), was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Jazz Album. Cole is a classically-trained jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist who plays drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, sings, and produces his material.[16][3][15] His work contains elements from a diverse range of music genres such as jazz, funk, pop, avant-garde, electronic, lo-fi (early) and grindcore (with Clown Core).[3][5][1] Cole is a "bedroom" musician who does not like working in a professional recording studio.[17] He practices drums for four hours a day, and writes music for seven hours a day. Cole feels his mission is to write his own favorite music, and he "never [tries] to make [his] music accessible to anyone."[3] He is known for using strange and counterintuitive chord progressions.[6] His lyrics often include humor and vulgarity, and his music features home-made videos. "Rock the Casbah" is a song by the English punk rock band The Clash, released in 1982 as the second single from their fifth album, Combat Rock. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US (their only top 10 single in that country) and, along with the track "Mustapha Dance", it also reached number eight on the dance chart.[4] The music for "Rock the Casbah" was composed by the band's drummer Topper Headon, based on a piano part that he had been toying with.[5][6] Finding himself in the studio without his three bandmates, Headon progressively taped the drum, piano and bass parts, recording the bulk of the song's musical instrumentation himself.[5][7] This origin makes "Rock the Casbah" different from the majority of Clash songs, which tended to originate with music written by the Joe Strummer–Mick Jones songwriting partnership.[7] Upon entering the studio to hear Headon's recording, the other Clash members were impressed with his creation, stating that they felt the instrumental track was essentially complete.[7] From this point, relatively minor overdubs were added, such as guitars and percussion. However, Strummer was not impressed by the page of suggested lyrics that Headon gave him.[5] According to Clash guitar technician Digby Cleaver, they were "a soppy set of lyrics about how much he missed his girlfriend".[5] "Strummer just took one look at these words and said, 'How incredibly interesting!', screwed the piece of paper into a ball and chucked it backwards over his head."[5] Strummer had been developing a set of lyrical ideas that he was looking to match with an appropriate tune. Before hearing Headon's music, Strummer had already come up with the phrases "rock the casbah" and "you'll have to let that raga drop", as lyrical ideas that he was considering for future songs.[8][9] After hearing Headon's music, Strummer went into the studio's bathroom and wrote lyrics to match the song's melody.[6][7] The version of the song on Combat Rock, as well as many other Clash compilations, features an electronic sound effect beginning at the 1:52-minute point of the song. This noise is a monophonic version of the song "Dixie". T-Square (formerly known as The Square), stylized in all-uppercase T-SQUARE, is a Japanese jazz fusion band formed in 1976.[1] They became famous in the late 1970s and early 1980s along with other Japanese jazz bands.[2] They are known for songs such as "Truth",[3] "Japanese Soul Brothers",[4] "Takarajima",[5] and "Omens of Love",[6] among others. During the first years simply The SQUARE was printed on the frontsides of their albums.[7] After the renaming of the band to T-Square the imprint changed to T-SQUARE (all in Capital letters) and their typical logo became a capital letter T printed over a red square.[8] The logo has got modified several times, reflecting the changing band names such as T-Square alpha (where an α sign got added to the logo[9]), T-Square plus (where the text "plus" was added centered next to the T in smaller letters[10]).[11] "Truth" was used as the theme for Fuji Television's Formula One coverage from 1987 to 1998 and starting in 2012.[12][13] Special arrangements of this song were used as the theme for Japan's F1 2001 to 2006.[note 1] The band has won, all told, 12 Japan Gold Disc Awards. "Mamma Mia" is a song by the Swedish pop group ABBA, written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, with the lead vocals shared by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It is the opening track on the group's third album, the self-titled ABBA (1975). The song was released in September 1975 as its sixth single. It tells the story of the narrator's on-again, off-again relationship with a lover who is repeatedly unfaithful to her. The song's name is derived from Italian and literally translates as "my mother", but is used as an interjection in situations of surprise, anguish, or excitement. The song was ABBA's first number one in the UK since "Waterloo" in 1974. The distinctive sound at the start of the song is the marimba.[2] According to biographer Carl Magnus Palm, the instrument was incorporated at the last minute, added after Benny Andersson found it in the studio and decided its "tick tock" rhythm was perfect for the track.[3] "Mamma Mia" was written at the home of Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and was the last track recorded for the album ABBA. It was one of four songs from the album to have a music video made to promote the album. Initially, however, "Mamma Mia" was never intended for release as a single.[2] Around this time, many artists were recording ABBA songs (such as "Honey, Honey" and "Bang a Boomerang"). ABBA offered "Mamma Mia" to British pop group Brotherhood of Man, who turned it down.[4] "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the Australian charts for three weeks; however, the promo clip for "Mamma Mia" proved the more popular after repeat screenings on Australian television, notably on the show Countdown.[5] ABBA's Australian record company, RCA, asked that "Mamma Mia" be released as a single but Polar Music refused, preferring them to release "SOS" first. However, Stig Anderson agreed to this; "Mamma Mia" was released in Australia in August 1975, where it spent 10 weeks at number one.[2] Cash Box said the single was "an example of [ABBA's] excellent musical taste," stating that the "tune is upbeat, with characteristically varied textures."[6] After this success in Australia, Epic Records in the United Kingdom took notice of ABBA for the first time since their Eurovision Song Contest winner "Waterloo". From then on, Epic began to heavily promote ABBA's singles with the immediate result of "SOS" reaching the Top 10 in the British market, their first hit since "Waterloo". "Mamma Mia" soon followed, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart in January 1976, the second of ABBA's 18 consecutive Top 10 singles there.[2] Record World said that "the reason [the song is a worldwide smash] should be self-explanatory after just one listen."[7] The B-side for the Australian release of "Mamma Mia" was "Hey, Hey Helen". In most other countries the B-side was the instrumental "Intermezzo Number 1". "Rock the Casbah" is a song by the English punk rock band The Clash, released in 1982 as the second single from their fifth album, Combat Rock. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US (their only top 10 single in that country) and, along with the track "Mustapha Dance", it also reached number eight on the dance chart.[4] The music for "Rock the Casbah" was composed by the band's drummer Topper Headon, based on a piano part that he had been toying with.[5][6] Finding himself in the studio without his three bandmates, Headon progressively taped the drum, piano and bass parts, recording the bulk of the song's musical instrumentation himself.[5][7] This origin makes "Rock the Casbah" different from the majority of Clash songs, which tended to originate with music written by the Joe Strummer–Mick Jones songwriting partnership.[7] Upon entering the studio to hear Headon's recording, the other Clash members were impressed with his creation, stating that they felt the instrumental track was essentially complete.[7] From this point, relatively minor overdubs were added, such as guitars and percussion. However, Strummer was not impressed by the page of suggested lyrics that Headon gave him.[5] According to Clash guitar technician Digby Cleaver, they were "a soppy set of lyrics about how much he missed his girlfriend".[5] "Strummer just took one look at these words and said, 'How incredibly interesting!', screwed the piece of paper into a ball and chucked it backwards over his head."[5] Strummer had been developing a set of lyrical ideas that he was looking to match with an appropriate tune. Before hearing Headon's music, Strummer had already come up with the phrases "rock the casbah" and "you'll have to let that raga drop", as lyrical ideas that he was considering for future songs.[8][9] After hearing Headon's music, Strummer went into the studio's bathroom and wrote lyrics to match the song's melody.[6][7] The version of the song on Combat Rock, as well as many other Clash compilations, features an electronic sound effect beginning at the 1:52-minute point of the song. This noise is a monophonic version of the song "Dixie". T-Square (formerly known as The Square), stylized in all-uppercase T-SQUARE, is a Japanese jazz fusion band formed in 1976.[1] They became famous in the late 1970s and early 1980s along with other Japanese jazz bands.[2] They are known for songs such as "Truth",[3] "Japanese Soul Brothers",[4] "Takarajima",[5] and "Omens of Love",[6] among others. During the first years simply The SQUARE was printed on the frontsides of their albums.[7] After the renaming of the band to T-Square the imprint changed to T-SQUARE (all in Capital letters) and their typical logo became a capital letter T printed over a red square.[8] The logo has got modified several times, reflecting the changing band names such as T-Square alpha (where an α sign got added to the logo[9]), T-Square plus (where the text "plus" was added centered next to the T in smaller letters[10]).[11] "Truth" was used as the theme for Fuji Television's Formula One coverage from 1987 to 1998 and starting in 2012.[12][13] Special arrangements of this song were used as the theme for Japan's F1 2001 to 2006.[note 1] The band has won, all told, 12 Japan Gold Disc Awards. In the 80s, "SPORTS",[17] "Truth",[18] "Yes, No",[19] and even their "F1 Grand Prix" compilation album won Gold Discs in the Jazz-Fusion category.[20] In the 90s, "Natural",[21] "Impressive",[22] "Human",[23] "Natsu no Wakusei",[24] "B.C. A.D."[25] and "Gravity" all won Gold Discs.[26] After more than two decades without Gold Discs, they've recently won back-to-back for 2021's "FLY! FLY! "Mamma Mia" is a song by the Swedish pop group ABBA, written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, with the lead vocals shared by Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It is the opening track on the group's third album, the self-titled ABBA (1975). The song was released in September 1975 as its sixth single. It tells the story of the narrator's on-again, off-again relationship with a lover who is repeatedly unfaithful to her. The song's name is derived from Italian and literally translates as "my mother", but is used as an interjection in situations of surprise, anguish, or excitement. The song was ABBA's first number one in the UK since "Waterloo" in 1974. The distinctive sound at the start of the song is the marimba.[2] According to biographer Carl Magnus Palm, the instrument was incorporated at the last minute, added after Benny Andersson found it in the studio and decided its "tick tock" rhythm was perfect for the track.[3] "Mamma Mia" was written at the home of Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus, and was the last track recorded for the album ABBA. It was one of four songs from the album to have a music video made to promote the album. Initially, however, "Mamma Mia" was never intended for release as a single.[2] Around this time, many artists were recording ABBA songs (such as "Honey, Honey" and "Bang a Boomerang"). ABBA offered "Mamma Mia" to British pop group Brotherhood of Man, who turned it down.[4] "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" topped the Australian charts for three weeks; however, the promo clip for "Mamma Mia" proved the more popular after repeat screenings on Australian television, notably on the show Countdown.[5] ABBA's Australian record company, RCA, asked that "Mamma Mia" be released as a single but Polar Music refused, preferring them to release "SOS" first. However, Stig Anderson agreed to this; "Mamma Mia" was released in Australia in August 1975, where it spent 10 weeks at number one.[2] Cash Box said the single was "an example of [ABBA's] excellent musical taste," stating that the "tune is upbeat, with characteristically varied textures."[6] After this success in Australia, Epic Records in the United Kingdom took notice of ABBA for the first time since their Eurovision Song Contest winner "Waterloo". From then on, Epic began to heavily promote ABBA's singles with the immediate result of "SOS" reaching the Top 10 in the British market, their first hit since "Waterloo". "Mamma Mia" soon followed, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart in January 1976, the second of ABBA's 18 consecutive Top 10 singles there.[2] Record World said that "the reason [the song is a worldwide smash] should be self-explanatory after just one listen."[7] The B-side for the Australian release of "Mamma Mia" was "Hey, Hey Helen". In most other countries the B-side was the instrumental "Intermezzo Number 1".
